El Xampanyet stands as a vibrant emblem of authentic Catalan gastronomy nestled in the heart of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella. This charming tapas bar and restaurant invites you to indulge in a sensory journey through Spain's rich culinary traditions, where every dish is a celebration of flavor and heritage.
From the moment you step inside El Xampanyet, the lively, warm atmosphere captivates you—a buzzing bar filled with locals and travelers alike, all drawn by the promise of exceptional tapas and convivial spirit. Though well-known enough to often have a queue, the wait is part of the experience, creating an eager anticipation for what awaits.
The menu reads like a love letter to Catalonia’s finest offerings. Revel in the tender octopus, cooked to perfection and bursting with smoky, briny notes that melt on your tongue. The grilled squid in its ink delivers an unforgettable depth of flavor—rich, savory, and decadently satisfying. Don’t miss the Butifarra del Perol, a traditional Catalan sausage that’s robust and fragrant, pairing beautifully with a glass of Husets cava or their expertly poured vermouth.
Seafood lovers will be enthralled by the steamed mussels and the multiple clam preparations, each bite showcasing the freshness of the Mediterranean, elevated by just the right touch of salt, pepper, and fruity olive oil. Classics like the Spanish omelette and Garbanzos con Tocino warm you with their hearty, comforting textures and balanced seasoning. And for those craving a sweet finish, the Mil Folhas Super Crocante offers a crisp, delicate layering of pastry with hints of liqueur-infused dulces that linger pleasantly on the palate.
The dining experience here goes beyond just the food—it's about the connection created at the communal tables where sharing plates lead to new friendships, the animated chatter of patrons, and the attentive service that makes you feel like a local regular from your very first visit. As Jason Liew notes, the mindful use of simple ingredients like olive oil and spices turns every bite into a “perfecto” experience, while John Crowley’s repeated visits underscore the genuine joy and “DAMNTasty” quality imbued in every dish.
Yes, El Xampanyet leans into its popularity, and it’s true the prices reflect its status as a beloved spot, but the warm hospitality, exceptional quality, and vibrant ambiance more than justify every euro. Whether you're drawn by the delectable octopus praised by Leydjenne Carter or the fresh, authentic flavors lauded by Sandra, this is a culinary haven that captures the soul of Barcelona’s tapas scene.
For those willing to arrive early and join the shared-table camaraderie, El Xampanyet offers not just a meal, but an unforgettable immersion into the heart and soul of Catalan dining culture—where each dish tells a story, and every visit becomes a cherished memory.
One of the best places you will ever eat in Barcelona. Small little Spanish tapas and beer place. Come ready to queue. The food is nothing but perfecto. The way they use salt, pepper and olive oil in most of their dishes makes every bit flavourful. Once you are in you don't need to wait long too. Recommend go in groups of 4 or more so can try more dishes. We had mini clams, bamboo shoot clams, squid, omelette, pan fried pork, and others. The beer comes in a small glass and its the perfect to wash down the food. Inside can be a bit cramp but the vibes inside is all cheery and full of happy customers. The tip of the iceberg is the service from all the staff which I dont know how they do it, as they are constantly on the move and don't even have a moment to rest. Laura was one of our servers along with others. She is so cheerful and full of energy and vibes. This place is a MUST eat in Barcelona. 6 stars if I could give 6
I’ve been coming here once a week for several months this year! They make you feel like a local! Great vibrant atmosphere with a staff that cares and creates joy and fun. The food is always great, or as I say…DAMNTasty!! From the Gildas, Anchovies and Montaditos to the freshly prepared seafood dishes you can’t go wrong. I love the Truita de bacallá (codfish omelette) and the Caragols (escargot simmered in a beef Bourguignon sauce)! I always get the anchovies as well as the Grilled Iberico Pork with Padron Peppers. It’s hard to choose between their seafood dishes so I usually get more than one! The calamari is to die for and their octopus is tender and delicious! Don’t skip on the razor clams which are fresh and seasoned simply but perfectly! The shrimp in garlic butter are finger licking good!! I will always have a glass of Vermouth or their namesake drink ‘El Xampanyet’!! Expect a queue but they process it quickly!
It’s a great place to experience authentic tapas. You might have to wait in a long line, but if it’s only a few minutes, I suggest standing at the bar. The service is good, but the main downside is that it’s a bit pricey since it’s a very touristy spot. Other than that, the food, service and the atmosphere are good.
One of the most memorable experiences in Barcelona. Hands down my favourite spot to try genuine Catalan food. The warm hospitality. The beauuuutiful fresh produce. We had to come back twice on our trip!
Delicious food and absolutely incredible staff! The octopus was divine (one of the best dishes I during my visit to Barcelona)! Also the cava and vermouth were delicious! Be sure to arrive early because there will be a line well before the restaurant opens. We were willing to share a table with a couple of people and ended up making new friends!
This tapas bar deserves all the praise! First of all, don’t get too intimidated by the crazy long queue as it moves quickly. Bonus if you’re a solo diner: I went alone and was able to skip the queue l. It was completely packed, so I initially had to stand at the bar to eat, but the atmosphere was great. A very kind person next to me even offered me her seat after she’d finished eating and was just staying for drinks, which I was really grateful for. The real highlight though is the food. Everything is clearly high quality. I had the Iberian grilled pork and the octopus with mash, both were excellent. I especially loved the little green peppers (I think it’s called Pimientos de Padrón ?) served with the pork. The sparkling wine is also a must. And the vibes in there are just so good. The staff serving me at the bar were incredibly friendly and kept the conversation going while he was juggling a million tasks at the same time. Such a great memory from Barcelona - highly recommend!
